LIST OF ARBORISTS:
Arborists are professional tree care providers who are trained to care for trees and help sustain them in the long term. To hire an arborist, the Manistee Conservation District recommends that you find a certified arborist by visiting the website of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), then clicking on the heading "Find An Arborist". CLICK HERE for the ISA website.
FINDING A LOGGER:
In short, foresters are trained to select the appropriate trees to be harvested based on the requirements of the trees and landowner's objectives, and to ensure that the resource is being managed in a sustainable and ethical manner. Loggers are professionals who are trained to cut the trees that are marked to be harvested by the forester.
Timber sales can be a complicated process for you as the landowner if you do not possess the technical expertise to understand forest management, timber prices, or contracts. Whether it is best to hire a forester to administer your timber sale or go directly to a logger depends on numerous factors such as the size of your parcel and your knowledge of the timber sale process. Whether you hire a forester or not, make sure that you obtain a written contract that clearly describes exactly what will occur and when it will occur during your timber sale. To quote the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) regarding the stewardship of Michigan's forests, 'There are many good loggers in Michigan so be sure that you are working with a qualified logging professional'. 'Look for loggers that have been trained by the Michigan Sustainable Forestry Initiative or are members of the Michigan Association of Timbermen or are certified as a Master Logger."
