Native to the U.S.
Range: eastern Quebec to southeastern Manitoba, south to New Jersey, Michigan, north to Wisconsin and northern Minnesota; scattered in the southern Appalachian Mountains; parts of New England
Typical Mature Height: 50 feet
Light Requirement: sun, partial shade, shade
Soils: well drained alkaline soils
Habitat: wetland forests, rocky hillsides
Cone: brown, small (< 1 inch long)
Wildlife Value: important winter cover and food source for wildlife; white-tailed deer aggressively browse young stems and often “yard up” in mature stands during the winter
Uses: lumber, including posts, shingles, and cabin logs; sometimes planted and used as a hedge; historically used by Native Americans and French settlers to treat scurvy; sap is high in Vitamin C
