Range: Quebec and Maine to Saskatchewan and eastern Montana, southeast to Florida, west to Arizona and south to central Mexico
Typical Mature Height: up to 12 feet
Light Requirement: sun, partial shade
Soils: sands, loams, and clays (acidic and calcareous soils)
Habitat: prairies and meadows
Flower Color: red, blue, brown
Bloom Time: late summer through late fall
Wildlife Value: grazing forage for large grass-eating mammals; nesting and cover materials for birds and other wildlife; nesting and structure material for native bees; larval host for butterflies
Uses: ornamental use for native prairie restoration
